Summer’s End

Remembering good times with good friends as the world continues its journey around the sun, and summer turns to autumn.

Tidewater Virginia

By Silver Blue

…has two seasons. Winter, and Summer. It’s either freezing cold, or scalding hot. Rare that we get a spring or an autumn.

Because of this (and because we had ice/sleet last week, and upper 80s this week), I decided to share a nice lazy day from Virginia Beach.

There, on the horizon!

By Silver Blue

I can see it!

Well, maybe I can’t, but HE can. That’s John Wareing (1923-2000), Virginia Beach Police Officer, Trainer, and more. (He served in the US Navy and founded Wareing’s Gym in Virginia Beach.)

So, what can HE see, that I can’t? He can see the progress made on the official galleries, etc. He can see that photos are flowing up to the SmugMug site. He can see… lots of things.

I can’t wait to be able to make the post that allows you to, too. It’s coming! Soon!

Silver Blue, who is consumed with excitement!

It just LOOKS like it is under construction

By Silver Blue

The Virginia Beach Conference Center (which replaced the old Virginia Beach Pavilion):

I’m sure the fact they’re always doing some sort of construction around the Convention Center doesn’t help promote the fact that it’s been complete for several years. I think it looks… sparse. In an HDR treatment, however, I like the colour shifts.

Silver Blue… who COULD have taken the construction out of this, but that would have been revisionist, wouldn’t it?

Well, wouldn’t it?

LOL.

Objets Trouvés

By Silver Blue

… or, in English, “Found Objects”.

When I went to the Boardwalk Art Show on Friday at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, I came across two things that captured my attention (good thing, because most of the artists (rightfully so), disallow photographs of their art).

Exactly what this, cast off in the shrubs, was is beyond me. I do know that it was about 2 blocks over from Croc’s, where they have a “Drag Brunch”. Perhaps some Drag Queen was accosted and lost one of her accoutrements. I know not.

Then, for yet another reason, this caught my eye:

From a Sugar Gum tree, “Gum balls” (which hurt like a lego if you step on them barefoot). I didn’t pose this photo…it’s exactly as I came across them.

The one photo that I really wanted to take of the Art Show the artist permitted me to: It appears that Roxette Bunny™ has been moonlighting and posing for art:

The artist even captured Roxette’s turned down ear! LOL.

Now, before I leave you this evening, allow me to pose a question.

Is it possible to plagiarize yourself? Obviously some people feel that you can, as John Fogerty had to go through the courts due to a case where the publishing company to the old Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Run Through the Jungle” claimed he’d (Fogerty’d) merely rewritten the words for “The Old Man Down The Road”. This case was decided in Fogerty’s favour, and he counter-sued for attorney fees. That wound up in the Supreme Court ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fogerty_v._Fantasy )

One of my favourtie Swedish artists is a musician/author/lecturer/composer named Alexander Bard. He’s been invovled in many groups from Baard to Army of Lovers to Bodies Without Organs (later reduced to “BWO”) to Vacuum to Alcazar to Gravitonas.

But NEVER have I heard someone go back and rewrite a song this way. The first minute or so is the original track he wrote for Army of Lovers. The rest of the song is the current from Gravitonas.

Silver Blue, who wonders if I can plagiarize myself in my style of photography?

Classic car…

…a 57 Chevrolet.

As seen cruising down the boulevard at the Oceanfront. A beautifully restored and maintained vehicle.

King Neptune!

By Silver Blue

Last day of Staycation found me back at the beach, this time, photographing King Neptune in Virginia Beach, at 31st street.

The photos speak for themselves.

Silver Blue, who imagines how I’m really going to miss having the time off with my camera. I’ll have to schedule some time again soon.

The National Aviation Monument, VA Beach

By Silver Blue | 1 comment

“This is a monument to the proud heritage of Naval Aviation that has had many of its beginnings in Hampton Roads. It is here in Hampton Roads that the very first take-off from a ship was made by Eugene Ely in 1910. It is here in Hampton Roads that The Nation prepared for WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East and other conflicts throughout the world, sending men and women who manned aircraft carriers, planes, ships, and submarines into harm’s way.

So it is here in Virginia Beach that we erect this Monument to Naval Aviation, honoring the proud aviators who wear the Wings of Gold, the Navy, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard, who help defend our great country and protect all Free Nations.”

The Homecoming.

Where It Began.

“Pilots Man Your Planes””

“Naval Warfare” (I think it says 1956-2006)

The Norwegian Lady of Virginia Beach

By Silver Blue

The story of the Norwegian Lady Statues may be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Lady

I ventured down to the oceanfront today, in the cold. So cold that I actually saw flurries at the beginning of my photo journey. I didn’t get pictures of King Neptune this time, but that, too, will change.

The Norwegian Lady:

and her memorial plaque:

The full frontal shot is:

The topmost plaque under the Lady is cast with a sailing ship and the inscription:

“I am the Norwegian Lady. I stand here, as my sister before me, to wish all men of the sea safe return home.”

The brass plaque (with the green patina) is the “In Memoriam” of the sailors aboard the barque “Dictator” who perished March 27, 1891.

Silver Blue, who always remembers the beauty and the fury of the ocean…

In the summer time….

By Silver Blue

The following photos, taken in 2007, remind me of summer. From pampas grass, to neon.

Listen as the wind goes through the grass, that looks like feathers….

And, well, as the disco song goes, “I love the nightlife…” because that’s when the neon comes to life. These are all from the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, July, 2007.

Pasta anyone?

Or maybe some coffee and donuts?

Maybe Mexican is your thing.

Or Wings…

Or… (hopefully) VERY fresh seafood.

Shall…we…play…a….game?

The opposite of retro is nouveau?

A club, or a suggestion? Fishing, or companionship?

Okay, why not just list EVERYTHING, dammit!

DQ, there everything is tasty….

…and we have year round fireworks.

The Virginia Beach Amusement Park, complete with electric palm trees. (That would make a good rock band name.)

A new meaning to “Rock Fish.”

Finally, I liked the angles on this hotel. It’s different from the norm.

Silver Blue, who is ready for the thunderstorms to let loose, and cool us down a bit.
