Angles Watching Over Me.

By Silver Blue

Angles? Surely I mean angels, yes?

No.

Something about this old, dirty building in Norfolk, with its centre windows reflecting the light of the clear blue sky that made me smile this afternoon. Plus, I thought it was a pretty neat take on an apartment building.

The years have passed…

By Silver Blue

…the names and purposes of the building have changed.

But Freemason Abbey is one of the best restaurants in Norfolk (and home to the 3rd best French soup in the world. The second? At Ye Olde College Diner, in State College, PA. The best? In France, of course).

The building the restaurant is housed in was built in 1873 as the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, VA. Freemason Abbey has been there since 1989. You can see where the original stained glass window was — it’s been bricked up for years, and has a mural on the inside of the building. It does boast a great open floor plan however, with dining on two levels:

They also have some of the best, most moist bread putting I’ve ever had. The sauce is to die for. In fact, I’ve never had a bad dish here.

Silver Blue, who is getting hungry just thinking about the Abbey!

There is beauty all around us…

…if we will just open our eyes and see.

How many times have you looked at something and not really seen it? I know I have, far too many times.

Dynamic angles, pattern, and stonework. The Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Across the street, MacArthur Center Mall:

…with the deco elevators….

…angled ceilings…

(and another view of them), along with…

…some awesome light fixtures. All things you’d never notice unless you took the time to stop and “look up.” Too often, we forget to do this, because we’re in such a rush to get everything done.

Finally, an external parking garage lends more angles to be enjoyed:

So…slow down, you move too fast…you’ve got to make the morning last…*
