Businesses are going under, and their buildings, instead of being repurposed, are being torn down.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, my summer was spent in my grandmother&#8217;s town of Kenton, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>One of the stores was an F. W. Woolworth&#8217;s, that went under long before the actual demise of the chain.<\/p>\n<p>For years, it sat, like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/woolworth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-342\" title=\"woolworth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/woolworth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/woolworth.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/woolworth-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Windows boarded up, or painted over. What would it have looked like had it still been open?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/timetravelwoolworth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-343\" title=\"timetravelwoolworth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/timetravelwoolworth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/timetravelwoolworth.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/timetravelwoolworth-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was a primitive attempt, in April 2000, to recapture the look. I could do better these days, but hey, I was in my learning phase then.<\/p>\n<p>What did it look like inside? How badly had the building deteriorated?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-339\" title=\"insidewoolworth1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Gee. Thanks. I can see a heck of a lot. How about some fill light?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-340\" title=\"insidewoolworth1a\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1a.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth1a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Grainy, but better. Sad. Is that &#8230; water on the inside of the building?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-341\" title=\"insidewoolworth2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/insidewoolworth2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alas, indeed it is. Anything of value had been stripped from the inside (including some things NOT of value, like the floor tile &#8212; necessary, for asbestos abatement, of course. But this was spelling the beginning of the end). Even though the building really wasn&#8217;t architecturally &#8220;significant&#8221;, you can bet that it was structurally sound, and quite solid when built, unlike the shell buildings of today.<\/p>\n<p>All that&#8217;s left now, however (as of 2008, when I was last in Kenton, for my grandmother&#8217;s funeral), is a parking lot:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0871.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-338\" title=\"IMG_0871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0871.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0871.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0871-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>They say you can&#8217;t go back, anymore than you can stop the wind from blowing &#8211; you can&#8217;t change the changes going on&#8230;they say you can&#8217;t go back and you can&#8217;t stop the door from closing&#8230;once you&#8217;ve gone, you can&#8217;t go back home&#8230;**<\/p>\n[audio:https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/ycgbh.mp3]\n<p>Silver Blue, who misses the way things were.<\/p>\n<p>(* &#8220;Left Outside Alone&#8221; by Anastacia, ** &#8220;You Can&#8217;t Go Back Home&#8221; by Sylvia)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;wanna breathe, can&#8217;t find air&#8230;* History is slowly fading from view across America.
