{"id":1077,"date":"2012-03-08T16:11:02","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T21:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/?p=1077"},"modified":"2012-03-08T16:11:02","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T21:11:02","slug":"lets-go-to-the-movies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/?p=1077","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Go To The Movies!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember when going to the cinema didn&#8217;t mean having to take out a second mortgage on your house, when you could get popcorn and a drink (and some candy) for less than $5, and how you could just &#8220;escape&#8221; into another world for a short while.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the smaller theaters these days have closed, having been consumed by the conglomerate megaplex chains of Regal, AMC, and the like.\u00a0 Still, I recall when, in Newport News (or was that section Hampton? It&#8217;s RIGHT on the dividing line), in Newmarket South, there were the Newmarket Cinemas (1 &amp; 2). They did so well that they expanded to\u00a0 3 &amp; 4, also known as the Rocking Chair Cinemas because in 3 &amp; 4, the chairs literally were like gliders.<\/p>\n<p>Times change, however. Nothing stays the same. I wanted to capture these memories before they were torn down in the name of &#8220;progress&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/1-cinema2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1078\" title=\"1-cinema2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/1-cinema2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/1-cinema2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/1-cinema2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cinemas 1 &amp; 2, boarded up and in a serious state of decay. These cinemas were in long halls, as if someone had backed up a tractor trailer and you watched inside.<\/p>\n<p>A gentler memory came out of the conversion to black and white:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2-cinema.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1079\" title=\"2-cinema\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2-cinema.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2-cinema.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2-cinema-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, there were theaters 3 and 4, built next door. Different format, with the rocking chairs and the theaters being put in round buildings:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/3-cinema31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1081\" title=\"3-cinema3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/3-cinema31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/3-cinema31.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.eyesofsilverblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/3-cinema31-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now home to the Antioch Christian Center (and Daycare), I recall seeing &#8220;First Wives&#8217; Club&#8221; in the theater on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the buildings were not egg yolk yellow then, but an off white.
